Taxi Scam in Indonesia: My Real Experience (+ how to avoid it)
If you’re traveling to Indonesia, you’ve probably heard about taxi scams. Here’s something you really need to know before you go.
I thought I would be fine.
But I almost got scammed myself.
What Happened to Me
When I arrived in Lombok, I took a private taxi from the airport.
At first, the driver tried to overcharge us.
I negotiated the price down to about half and he agreed.
So I thought everything was settled.
But once we started driving, he suddenly changed it.
He began asking for more money.
When I refused, he ignored me and kept driving.
Even when we asked him to stop the car and let us out, he continued driving and kept demanding more money.
It was late at night, and I felt really uncomfortable.
Honestly, it was scary.
It was one of the most unpleasant moments of my trip.
Is taxi Scam Common in Indonesia?
Taxi scams can happen everywhere, especially in tourist areas like Bali or Lombok. Even in Korea!
However, using official apps like Gojek or Bluebird can significantly reduce the risk.
In many tourist areas, drivers may:
- Change the price mid-ride
- Refuse to stop
- Take longer routs
- Give incorrect change
However, using official services like Gojek, Grab, or Bluebird can significantly reduce the risk.
How to Avoid Taxi Scams in Indonesia
Here are simple ways to stay safe
- Use ride-hailing apps
Use apps like Gojek or Grab or Bluebird.
You can see the price before booking.
Also it offers GPS tracking. Unoffical or unregisters cars can’t be traced so I prefer using thos apps for safety.
- Avoid random drivers at the airport
Many unofficial drivers will approach you directly.
It’s safer to use official counters or apps.
- Confirm the price before getting in
Always double- check and don’t assume.
Fixed pricing or rate is always better.
- Don’t travel late at night if possible.
It’s much harder to handle situations safely at night.
Final tip
Indonesia is an amazing country, but small things like this can ruin your trip. Save this pose before your Indonesia trip and stay safe!
